Western Mexico Mixed-Bag Shooting

Frank “Gabino” Ruiz, Western Mexico’s premier outfitter, offers a world-class combination of classic decoy waterfowling, volume dove shooting and sporty quail hunting — all provided with professionalism, safety and style.

This unique combination of great shooting is found in the northwestern coastal state of Sonora. This is not the “Old Mexico” of legend, but a region of surprisingly sophisticated cities and agricultural communities surrounded by a vast and bountiful wild game bird habitat. Both whitewing and mourning doves live here year round in abundance (not migrating), along with Gambel’s and elegant quail, all enjoying endless fields of sorghum, sesame, corn and other food grains, bordered by thick fence rows and brush of mesquite and chaparral.

“The doves kept coming for two solid hours, wave after wave, flock after flock, high, low, everywhere. With the shooting virtually non-stop, the bird boys scurrying after downed birds and fresh cartridges, and the sheer excitement of seeing so many doves in the air at once, it’s as exhilarating as anything you can do standing up.”

The duck habitat is perfection—endless miles of shallow-water estuaries, mangrove swamp, and freshwater ponds located adjacent to grain and vegetable production. In addition to the extensive natural habitat, Ruiz has created his own duck marsh by flooding several thousand acres of coastal desert with brackish water diverted from the Sea of Cortez. The ingenious “custom designed” marsh varies from a few inches to knee-deep and is the winter home to many thousands of ducks.

“I’ve hunted ducks all over the hemisphere, and I have had some really good days — but never the equal of that first morning this December with Frank Ruiz! Never have I seen so many cooperative pintails.”
