Primary targets are the huge schools of 2-5 pound bonefish, and larger cruising pairs and singles (the lodge’s record bone is 33 inches and 14 pounds). Casa Blanca is also perhaps the finest permit resource in the world. As many as twenty have been boated on fly rods in a single week. It is not extraordinary to see within casting range twenty-five to fifty permit in a single day — their familiar sickle shaped fins piercing the surface of the waters near Esperanza or Tres Marias flats. Tarpon inhabit Ascension Bay and some nearby lagoons, adding to the area’s diverse fishery. Exploring the labyrinth of mangrove-rimmed lagoons, your guide might suggest trying for one of the dozen species of snapper or sight-casting to barracuda and jack crevalle. Lying only two hundred yards from Casa Blanca’s beach, the Palancar Reef teems with numerous reef species and seasonal pelagic fish including wahoo, dolphin, and Spanish mackerel. Most boats used by the lodges are 16-foot Dolphin flats skiffs that will accommodate two fishermen and a guide. Each is constructed with a forward casting deck, tandem passenger seats, rod racks, and a poling platform. |
