During our winter months in the Northern Hemisphere, why not make it summer and experience outstanding and varied trout fishing in the most peaceful, beautiful and hospitable country in the Southern Hemisphere — Chile. Fishing resources here are rich indeed, with acrobatic rainbows, resident browns, brook trout and steelhead available during the long November-April season. Our outfitter in Chile is American-owned Southern Chile Expeditions. We know their rivers very well, and we can assure you that while you are with SCE, you will be in extremely capable and caring hands. SCE’s approach is unique in Chile, or anywhere in South America for that matter. They have invested in a variety of specialized boats to match specific water types. This means you fish from the most productive platforms on all waters and in all conditions during the season.
“I landed more than 50 rainbow and brown
trout while floating the Figueroa River back down to El Patagon.
It was easily the best trout fishing day of my life”
For drift fishing, you will use Catarafts. Based on two 24"inflatable tubes and a rowing frame, Catarafts allow you to stay over fish in super-productive runs with currents that would normally make it impossible to fish in a standard drift boat. AIRE and Achilles inflatables, Wooldridge and Yamaha jet sleds and 18-foot Lund Alaskans round out the fleet. Of course, float tubes and walk/wade trips are offered for those who enjoy fishing in this manner. Their fleet of fishing vessels sets SCE apart from all other fly-fishing operators, as does the fact that their guides all have at least 8 years of professional experience. When you travel halfway around the world, you want every aspect of your trip to be the best. SCE’s two luxurious lodges are dedicated to providing the best — in the unspoiled magnificence of fabled Patagonia.
“Our family of eight vacationed and fished
at both Yan Kee Way and El Patagon. We all agreed it was our
best trip ever. The combination of great fishing, adventure expeditions
and luxury has to be unmatched anywhere.”
Please click on “The Fishing,” “Slide Show,” etc. in the tan navigation bar immediately above — these pages contain much more detailed information and lots of photos to better acquaint you with the programs. COST: PRIME TIME: November through mid-April. HOW TO GET THERE: American and Delta offer daily service to Santiago Chile, as does Lan Chile, the Chilean National Airline. All of the flights depart in the evening and arrive early in the morning at the Santiago International Airport. A one-time $100 entry fee is collected at customs. After receiving your luggage and clearing customs, you’ll be met and walk a few minutes over to the domestic terminal where you’ll connect with a 90-minute flight to Puerto Montt. Upon arrival — if you are going to Yan Kee Way — you will be transferred via private car around one hour to the lodge. If you are going to El Patagon it requires a bit more travel. In Puerto Montt you are assisted over to the private charter area for a hour-long flight to Chaiten, then from Chaiten, you are transferred via private vehicle three hours to El Patagon. It’s a bit remote, but the drive is spectacular. You will be in the high rainforest and seeing the multitude of magnificent waterfalls along the way will make it worth the extra travel time.
